Rebecca Johnson
Voice teacher based in the East Bay and San Francisco, offering private lessons for children and adults
Your Teacher
I am a voice teacher with over 20 years of vocal training and a background in classical, musical theater, and contemporary styles including pop, jazz, R&B, and rock. I work with both children and adults, from beginners through intermediate and more experienced singers, and tailor each lesson to the individual. I also care deeply about helping students develop musical expression and a voice that feels personal not just technically correct.
Whether you are building a foundation, returning to singing after time away, or preparing for performances or auditions, lessons are designed to support your specific goals.
My training includes work with a range of respected teachers, including those connected to Juilliard, as well as graduate study in vocal pedagogy at Belmont University. I focus on healthy technique, clear guidance, and creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable exploring and developing their voice.
What I teach
I teach voice across classical, musical theater, and contemporary styles including pop, rock, R&B, gospel, folk, and country. Lessons can also support speaking voice, performance confidence, and rhythm-based styles such as rap.
In addition to voice, I offer beginning and intermediate piano instruction, as well as foundational musicianship skills including reading music, ear training, and pitch development.
I also prepare students for auditions, performances, competitions, and collegiate music programs.
What Students Can Expect
Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals and timeline, and level of commitment.
Short track:
Focused, practical work on one or two key adjustments to improve a piece or prepare for an audition or performance. This approach is efficient and goal-oriented.
In-between track:
A balanced approach that builds technical skills over time without going deeply into detail all at once. This allows for steady progress while keeping lessons clear, manageable, and musically engaging.
Long track:
Work focuses on coordination of the whole body, from the feet and posture through the core and breath, and into the jaw, tongue, neck, and facial muscles. Specific areas are addressed based on each student’s needs.
This more in depth process develops technique over time and creates greater ease, consistency, and control in the voice. We also work with increased specificity in rhythm, pitch, and vowel shaping, while developing musical expression and a stronger artistic connection to the material.
For classical singers, this can include detailed work on arias. I am a coloratura soprano specializing in coloratura technique and upper vocal extension. For contemporary styles such as pop and R&B, I also work with vocal agility, including runs and fast moving passages.
I assess each student’s starting point and adjust accordingly. Some challenges, such as pitch accuracy, may take more time and are addressed through a clear, step by step process.
